Theater Night – Saturday, July 31 – Theatricum Botanicum, Topanga Canyon

The Los Padres Ski and Social Club invites its members to the Theatricum Botanicum in Topanga Canyon Saturday, July 31 for the World Premiere of “The Last, Best Small Town.” Playwright John Guerra draws on his own personal history from Fillmore:

Two neighboring families — one Latine and one white — live in nearby Fillmore, the self-proclaimed “Last, Best Small Town in Southern California.” Set during the first decade of the 2000s, immediately following the financial crisis, the children of these families come of age, fall in love, suffer loss, and continually hunt for their place in a changed world that can no longer promise them a better life than their parents. Guerra’s play is a striking 21st Century response to Thornton Wilder’s Our Town.

Join us for opening night and a picnic in the Theatricum’s beautiful gardens before the show. Tickets are $27 each and need to be purchased by July 20 to secure seats together!

RAFTING ON THE UPPER KERN RIVER, MAY 22-23

We are planning a rafting trip on the upper Kern River, above Lake Isabella for the weekend of May 22-23.  The plan is now for us to individually drive up Saturday, stay overnight at a motel, raft (or Kayak) Sunday morning, and come home Sunday evening.  Bryan Hennes is making motel and rafting reservations. Prices will be provided later and full payment will need to be made by May 6 to hold your reservation.  We had a few folks do this last year and it was a blast!

BOCCE BALL & GENERAL MEETING, MAY 6TH

We have rescheduled our Bocce Ball Game and socially distanced General meeting for Thursday, May 6.  The event will be in the lawn area west of the Pierpont Bay Yacht Club, between the parking lot and walkway.  Bocce Ball will start at 4:30pm and the meeting at about 5:30pm.  The club will provide sanitizing supplies for the Bocce Ball games and the keys to the nearby restroom; members will provide their own seating, beverages and snacks.  Per Covid requirements, living groups (bubbles) will need to sit at least 6 feet apart and wear masks.  As always, there may be drawings and prizes!

More details will follow closer to the date!

EARTH DAY

Join fellow LPSC members as we celebrate the 51st anniversary of Earth Day with a beach cleanup. Most organizations are hosting virtual events throughout April (now called Earth Month). But we will be traditionalists with our event on Thursday, April 22. We will gather at 11 AM at West 5th Street & Mandalay Beach Road, Oxnard, CA (across from Oxnard Shores Mobile Home Park). There is plenty of parking along the street. Lunch, for anyone interested, to follow in Channel Islands Harbor (bring something to eat or pick up something at a local restaurant – we plan to picnic so bring a sitting device if you want.)

We are planning this around the low tide schedule. Wear your LPSC t-shirt, bring comfortable shoes (or go barefoot), sun hat/sun screen, gloves, a bag for collecting trash, if you have it – a grabber, a chair or blanket for lunch time AND A MASK (we will follow the correct guidelines).
